The Nango district of Minamiaizu Town, where Hanaizumi Sake Brewery is located, is still one of Japan’s most heavy snowfall areas, with nearly 2 meters of snow falling every winter. A long time ago, when roads and distribution were not well developed, the mountain pass was closed by snow, and things could not reach from outside the village as expected, making it difficult to obtain alcohol. It is said that Hanaizumi Sake Brewery started when local people who had the idea of “If you don’t have sake, let’s make it yourself” gathered and started making sake by themselves.
Hanaizumi Sake Brewery has had a long-standing love affair with the sake making process and it is exemplified in the “Roman” series of sake. With a different sake for every season, the Roman series derives from a combination of the Japanese words for “Number One” and “First Romance”. Overlapping with the well-worn phrase, “Brewing is Romance”, these combinations resulted in the “Roman” brand of sake.
