LIMITED RETRO DESIGN ASAHI WILKINSON
The background to the legendary Wilkinson range is fascinating and starts in the late 1800’s when John Clifford Wilkinson, a young Englishman was sent to work for a trading company in Kobe, Hyogo Prefecture, Japan in his early twenties. Some years later, around 1889, he was out hunting in the Takarazuka area when he stumbled upon a natural spring with bubbling, mineral-filled water pouring out of it.
This water source was near the Muko river, and this encounter was the very humble beginnings of the Wilkinson company which would go on to bottle and distribute this sparkling, carbonated (“Tansan" in Japanese) water throughout the country and ultimately to the rest of the world.
During the late 1800’s there were many epidemics of Cholera in Japan, and a safe source of water was a prime concern for many to escape the ravages of this deadly disease. Initially the bottled water was labelled as Takarazuka water, but the name was difficult for people to pronounce in foreign countries, and it reverted to the company owner’s surname - WILKINSON for ease of branding and marketing from that point forward.
This range of 190 ml bottles is designed specifically for the bar environment with a reusable metallic clip feature that allows multiple pours by bar staff or guest from their dedicated bottle. The unique and visually appealing retro design also points to the range’s Japanese design origin.
